In a large living room, textured pale wallpaper and traverse are neutral backgrounds for paintings and furniture. So that the whole room does not become overwhelming, the designer has designed one corner in a more intimate mood, with Georgian desk, gilded French mirror and pieces of Chinese porcelain. Suede-lined walls and comfortable seating give a feeling of welcoming warmth to a small den which is an informal gathering place for family members. In a house where the owner wanted her two splendid oriental screens to be the focal points of interest, the designer put one in the hall, with an English antique or possibly the bottom half of an 18th century dresser and hung the other on a dining room wall.
